Maldives Planning Guide

With over 180 resorts spread across the Maldives, planning the right trip can feel overwhelming.

At first glance, many resorts appear similar. White sand, turquoise lagoons, exceptional service. That part is a given.

What truly makes the difference is choosing a resort that fits you.

We have personally visited more than 60 Maldives resorts, and this guide shares our top planning insights to help you cut through the noise and create the right experience from the very start.

Size Really Does Matter

Maldivian islands range from tiny, intimate sandbanks measuring just 50 metres across, to expansive islands stretching over 3 kilometres. This choice shapes your entire stay.

Some travellers love the intimacy of smaller islands, where everything is a short barefoot walk and the atmosphere feels calm and cocooned.

Small - The Nautilus

Others prefer larger islands where you can cycle around, discover hidden corners, and enjoy a wider range of restaurants and activities.

Large - Waldorf Astoria

Mid sized islands often strike the perfect balance between the two.

There is no right or wrong choice, only what suits your travel style.

Medium - Como Maalifushi

By Boat or By Plane

Getting to your resort is part of the Maldives experience.

Speedboats and luxury yachts typically take between 15 and 60 minutes and are ideal for resorts closer to Malé. Arrive by Luxury Speedboat - Four Seasons Resort Kuda Huraa

Seaplane transfers usually last between 30 and 60 minutes and open access to more remote atolls, often delivering that deeper sense of escape. Arrive by Seaplane - Six Senses Laamu

Both options have advantages and limitations, from arrival times to comfort and cost. The key is matching the transfer type to your priorities and expectations.

The Importance of a House Reef

The Maldives is famous for its marine life, but not all resorts are equal when it comes to snorkelling straight from shore.

Some islands boast exceptional house reefs where you can step directly into the lagoon and find vibrant coral and abundant marine life. Park Hyatt is a particulary great example of this. Others require boat excursions to reach the best snorkelling spots, like Joali.

If snorkelling is high on your wish list, this is a crucial detail that should influence your resort choice from the outset.

Beach Villa or Water Villa

The iconic water villa is the Maldives dream for many travellers, but it is not always the best option for every resort or every guest.

Beach villas offer direct sand access, more privacy in some resorts, and are often better suited for families. Like the ones at Soneva Fushi. Water villas vary significantly depending on lagoon depth, orientation, and distance from the island. Like the ones at Four Seasons Resort Laanda Giraavaru.

We assess this decision on a resort by resort basis, guiding you toward the option that delivers the experience you are truly looking for, rather than simply the most photographed one.
